    Catch and Kill

Lies, Spies, and a Conspiracy to Protect Predators

    By Ronan Farrow

    Published 10/2019

    About the Author

Ronan Farrow is an investigative journalist, lawyer, and former government advisor whose work has consistently centered around issues of human rights, social justice, and the corruption of power. Born on December 19, 1987, in New York City, Farrow is the son of actress Mia Farrow and filmmaker Woody Allen, although his relationship with his father has been strained due to allegations of sexual abuse within the family. Farrow’s upbringing in a family deeply involved in the arts and social activism heavily influenced his worldview, driving him to pursue a career that combines legal advocacy with hard-hitting journalism.

Farrow’s early career was marked by his work with the U.S. government, where he served as a Special Advisor for Humanitarian and NGO Affairs in the Obama administration. However, it was his shift to journalism that brought him widespread recognition. His reporting has appeared in prestigious outlets such as The New Yorker, where he has tackled some of the most challenging and controversial stories of our time. Farrow’s work has earned him numerous accolades, including the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service in 2018, which he shared with other journalists for his role in exposing the sexual abuse allegations against Harvey Weinstein. His book, "Catch and Kill: Lies, Spies, and a Conspiracy to Protect Predators," is a continuation of this investigative journey, delving into the dark world of media manipulation, corporate espionage, and the systematic silencing of sexual abuse survivors.

    Main Idea

"Catch and Kill" is a harrowing account of the lengths to which powerful individuals and institutions will go to protect themselves from scandal, even at the expense of truth and justice. The book chronicles Farrow's efforts to expose Harvey Weinstein's decades-long pattern of sexual abuse, a task made all the more difficult by the various forces arrayed against him. These include not only Weinstein's personal network of lawyers, spies, and public relations experts but also the complicity of major media organizations like NBC, which attempted to stifle Farrow's reporting.

At its core, "Catch and Kill" is a story about power—how it is wielded, protected, and abused. It sheds light on the pervasive culture of silence that allows predators like Weinstein to operate with impunity, as well as the courage required to break that silence. Farrow's narrative is not just about Weinstein, but about a system that enables and perpetuates such abuses, encompassing the media, legal systems, and corporate environments. The book ultimately serves as both an exposé and a call to action, urging society to hold those in power accountable and to support the survivors who dare to speak out.

    Introduction: Breaking the Silence

The opening chapter of "Catch and Kill" sets the tone for the entire book. Farrow introduces readers to the pervasive culture of silence that has long protected powerful men like Harvey Weinstein. This silence is maintained through a combination of fear, intimidation, and legal machinations, creating an environment where victims are afraid to come forward, and those who do are often discredited or ignored. Farrow himself faced significant obstacles in trying to bring Weinstein's story to light, including resistance from his own employer, NBC. This chapter underscores the central theme of the book: the struggle between truth and power.
